Athens Tour

During this 4-hour tour around the centre of Athens, you will have the opportunity to see the most important sites and places of interest that the Greek capital has to offer.

We will set off from the agreed location and go to Syntagma Square to see the Greek Parliament and the most historic and famous hotels of the city. Then, we will drive to the Temple of Olympian Zeus and continue to Panathinaic Stadium (Kallimarmaro), where we can stop to take photos and see the place where the first modern Olympic Games took place in 1896. Next, we will drive to the Zappeion Hall, which was built for the Olympic Games of 1896 and, after a brief stop there, we will drive back to the House of Parliament to watch the changing of the guards. Afterwards, we will drive down Panepistimiou Street, past the Monetary Museum of Athens, as well as the magnificent buildings of the Academy of Athens and the National Library of Greece.

The last – but definitely not least – stop on our tour is the area of the Acropolis of Athens. There, you will have the chance to climb up the hill to this unique archaeological site, see the Parthenon, the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, the Theatre of Dionysus and of course the New Acropolis Museum.

After our tour has been completed, your driver will drive you back to your hotel or cruise ship.

Livadeia

Livadeia, a small town that is situated in a beautiful location among mountains, 90 km to the northwest of Athens, is proud to be the home of a Catalan Castle, one of only four Catalan Castles that can be found in Greece. This medieval castle was built during the occupation of the city by the Catalans (14th c.) and, located on the hill of Profitis Elias, has a wonderful view over the town of Livadeia.

Delphi

The ancient Greeks believed that Delphi was the centre, or “navel” of the world, and it was a sacred area for their tradition: it was the cultural and religious centre of all Ancient Greeks for centuries, it was the place where they resorted if they needed reliable advice from the oracle, and it was where they worshipped Apollo. It was so revered by all city-states that it was to everyone a symbol of sanctity and unity. In Delphi you can visit the Temples of Apollo and Athena, the Treasury of the Athenians, the Ancient Theatre of Delphi, the Gymnasium, the Stadium, the Sibyl Rock, the Altar of the Chians, the Stoa of the Athenians, the Tholos and the Castalia Fountain. A visit to the Archaeological Museum of Delphi to admire the famous Charioteer with his unique gaze should not be missed. Delphi is recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

Arachova

Arachova is a beautiful picturesque town built on Mount Parnassos with long tradition in the production of cheese and manufacturing hand-made carpets.

Monastery of Saint Loukas

The Monastery of Saint Loukas, built in the Middle Byzantine period, is one of the best maintained monasteries of its time and thanks to its unique architectural and cultural value it has been inscribed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

We will start our journey from the agreed meeting point. Our first stop will be at the Castle of Livadeia. After we admire the castle and its beautiful view, we will continue our drive to Delphi. In Delphi we will make a longer stop in order to visit the sites, the Museum and all the places of interest. Afterwards, we will go to Arachova where we can enjoy a walk around the town, get a snack or buy souvenirs. Our last stop is on the way back, at the Monastery of Saint Loukas.

Delfi, the farthest stop of our tour, is 170km from the centre of Athens. Our tour is estimated to last 7 hours, including 3 hours for visits to sites and museums.

Meteora

Meteora, which means “hovering” or “in limbo”, is a gigantic stone complex that is located in the northwestern part of the Plain of Thessaly, near Pindus Mountains. Their rock formation is hard to explain geologically, as it is made up of constituents that are not typically found in areas that are surrounded by mountains, as Meteora is. Geologists estimate that the formation of Meteora may have started over sixty million years ago.

The first people that inhabited Meteora were ascetic groups of monks who chose the isolated location to avoid any contact with people. Meteora is the largest complex of monasteries and nunneries after Mount Athos. In the past it was home to 24 monasteries, while nowadays only six of them are still in use.

Meteora is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List meeting 5 different criteria, among which is the one of exceptional natural beauty and aesthetic importance. It makes a lot of sense, since it can literally take your breath away!

Theopetra Cave

Theopetra Cave, a limestone rock formation was populated since as early as the Middle Paleolithic period, and up to the Neolithic Period. The signs of human presence that date as back as the ones in the Theopetra Cave and bridge the Pleistocene with the Holocene, are of utmost importance to scientists worldwide as they are very rare findings. Various tools, pottery items and jewellery from all the periods Theopetra was populated have been found in excavations in the area.

Thermopyles

Thermopyles, which means “hot gates”, is the name of a narrow passage with hot springs where Leonidas and his 300 Spartan soldiers, along with 700 Thespians, gave a historic and heroic battle against the Persians in 480 BC. This battle was the inspiration for the film “300”. Nowadays, the monument dedicated to Leonidas and his heroic soldiers, along with the historical hill of Kolonos mark the area where the battle was fought.

We will set off from the agreed location and begin our trip to Meteora, which is approximately a three-hour-drive. Upon arriving, we will visit the Monastery of Great Meteoro, which was built in the middle of the 14th century and, apart from the monastery itself, also has a Museum that we can visit. Our next stop is the Monastery of Roussanou, built in the middle of the 16th century, which today is a nunnery with 13 nuns. Next, we will visit the Holy Monastery of the Holy Trinity, built in mid-15th century and the Holy Monastery of Varlaam (16th c.). Our last stops on our visit to Meteora will be the Holy Monastery of Saint Nikolaos Anapafsas (14th c.) and the Holy Monastery of Saint Stefanos (12th c.). The latter was shelled by the Nazis in WW2, but was later restored and now is the home to 28 nuns.

After we have completed our visits to the monasteries of Meteora, we can enjoy walk around the quaint little town of Kalampaka, which is built at the foothills of the Meteora complex. Then, we can visit the Theopetra Cave, the limestone rock formation which is located 3 km from Kalampaka. Our last stop on our trip will be on our way back, as we are going to visit the Monument that commemorates the historic battle that Leonidas and his 300 soldiers gave in the area of Thermopyles.

Meteora is located 370km from the centre of Athens. Our tour will last approximately 12 hours, allowing 4 hours for visits to monasteries and places of interest.

The Corinth Canal

The Corinth Canal, an idea initially conceived by Periandros in the 6th century BC, was eventually realized in the late 19th century. It is 6.34 km long and 24.6m wide, and it is crossed by approximately 12000 ships annually.

Ancient Corinth

Ancient Corinth was the most affluent city-state of the ancient world, and has been inhabited since as early as the 7th century BC.

Mycenae

Mycenae was one of the most powerful city-states of the ancient Greek world and the kingdom of Agamemnon. Having been populated since the 7th century BC, it developed a glorious civilization which can be understood nowadays through the various admirable sites that still exist: the Treasure of Atreus, Grave Circle A (which is also known as the tomb of Agamemnon), Grave Circle B, the Cyclopean Walls (13th century BC), the Subterranean Cistern and the Lion Gate.

Nafplio

Nafplio, the first capital of Greece after the country gained its independence, is a beautiful picturesque town that combines both historical and architectural significance. Its castle, Palamidi, is built on a cliff which has a breathtaking view to the sea and to Mpourtzi, a small island with a Venetian fortress. Nafplio is an excellent place for a nice meal or a relaxing walk around the town to admire its traditional architecture.

Epidaurus

Epidaurus is a small seaside village near Nafplio with beautiful landscape and beaches nearby. However, the reason why Epidaurus is a centre of attention is its ancient theatre with its exceptional acoustics that makes it possible for the audience to hear a match being struck at the centre of the stage, regardless of where they are seated. Another site of interest that can be found in Epidaurus is the sanctuary of Asclepios the healer, son of Apollo and god of Medicine.

We will set off from the agreed location. Driving to the south, we will make a short stop at the Corinth Canal to admire the view. Next on our itinerary is Ancient Corinth, where we can visit the archaeological site, the Museum and the Acropolis. Then, after a drive through beautiful landscapes, we will arrive at Mycenae, where we will visit the unique archaeological sites and the Museum. After Mycenae, Nafplion is an excellent way to further our trip since it provides a great opportunity for a relaxed walk and a meal. Our last stop will be Epidaurus, after which we will return to Athens.

The tour is estimated to last 8 hours including stops for meals, visits to museums, archaeological sites and places of interest.

Olympia

Olympia is situated in the region of Elis in Western Peloponnese. Originally dedicated to Zeus, it was an important religious sanctuary of the ancient Greek world and as such it attracted visitors from all the Greek world. It was the home of the statue of Zeus, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world and the birthplace of the ancient Olympic Games, which were first organized there in the 8th century B.C. and took place every four years until the 4th century A.D. While the Olympic Games were taking place, Olympic Truce was declared so that athletes, who could only be freeborn Greeks, could travel peacefully to Olympia and take part in the Games, thus honouring Zeus.

Since the modern Olympic Games were revived in 1896, Olympia has been their starting point as it is the place where the Olympic flame is lit every four years before it travels to the city that hosts the Olympic Games.

We will drive along the coastal road to the Corinth Canal, where we can stop briefly to admire the view. Then we will set off for Olympia, travelling through Central Peloponnese and passing by the cities of Tripoli and Megalopoli. After we enjoy the drive through the Greek countryside we will arrive in Olympia, where we can visit the archaeological site with the sanctuary of the Olympian Zeus, the Ancient Stadium, the Archaeological Museum, the Museum of the History of the Ancient Olympic Games and/or the Modern Olympic Games Museum. If you are into running, you can experience a run in the ancient Olympic Stadium, beginning at the ancient starting line which is still visible today.

After our visit to Olympia has been complete, we will travel back to Athens, where we will arrive early in the evening.

 

Olympia is located 300 kilometres from the centre of Athens. Driving to Olympia takes about 3:30 hours, so the total duration of our trip cannot be shorter than 9 hours, allowing 2 hours for our visits to sites and museums.

Sounion

Cape Sounion, located at the southernmost tip of Attica, is the destination that you must not miss if you have a few hours to spare in Athens. Its ideal location offers a breathtaking view of the Saronic Gulf and the Aegean Sea, while on a clear day you can also see up to six islands at a distance. The most significant feature of the area, though, is the Temple of Poseidon, which is perched atop a cliff at the edge of the Cape, at a height of 60 metres above sea level. The Temple of Poseidon was built in the middle of the 5th century B.C. to honour Poseidon, the ancient Greek God of the sea.

We will pick you up from the assigned location and together we will drive along the southern coastline of Attica. As we drive, you will be able to see the most vibrant coastal suburbs of Athens: Glyfada, Voula and Vouliagmeni, along with their beaches which are enjoyed by thousands of people daily. Further down on our drive, we will come across the picturesque seaside resorts of Lagonissi, Saronida and Palaia Fokaia. Afterwards we will arrive at Cape Sounion, where you can visit the archaeological site, see the remains of the Temple of Poseidon and gaze at the unique view of the Aegean Sea. Moreover, you can enjoy a refreshment or snack at the nearby café

Cape Sounion is 70km from the centre of Athens and it takes approximately one 1hr10’ to reach it, always depending on the traffic. The total duration of our visit cannot be smaller than 3 hours, allowing about a one-hour visit to the archaeological site.
